January 2006 Sermon
Schedule: MINISTER’S MUSINGS Judging by the Gregorian calendar on my desk the earth has made another orbit around the sun while I wasn’t noticing. Luckily we didn’t all fly off into space on the way around but are here all together again to begin the next turn. Another turn. Each of us starting off again dragging every memory, joy, sorrow and injury that each of the bag of bones in which we find ourselves has collected on all the previous turns. This may be a good time to look through your baggage and find some stuff to cast off or recycle. You are bound to pick up some bargains this year and you’ll need a little empty space in which to hoard them. Find yourself a nice quiet time and sit down and make a list. Here are a few things to consider getting rid of.
1)
Old
grudges If you didn’t have a chance to burn them up at church on New Year’s Day – consider a meditation in which you do get rid of one or more. And if you care to do so – I am always available to listen to what you discover. Blessings for the New Year Julie

Parent’s Group
Potluck: Potluck followed by discussion. We will meet at 11:30 on Jan 8. Newcomers are always welcome. Parents and children eat together and then kid’s go off to play (childcare is provided) and adults spend an hour on that days theme. For the next several months we will be following a curriculum called being a UU parent. We will be meeting on the second Sunday of every month. Worship Service Committee: Every worship service needs both up front and behind the scenes folks in order for it to work. If you would like to be involved but want no part of preaching or leading a service this committee might be perfect for you. This group will learn how to use the sound system and take turns operating it on Sunday; sign folks up to hand out hymnals, make sure we have oil for the chalice and the lights and heat are off when we leave. There are a myriad of little tasks one could take on that would require minimal amounts of time and few meetings. If you would be interested please let Julie know. Social Justice Kids: During January we will be collecting donations of gently-used children's books. On Sunday, January 1st the children in the Religious Education program will be making bookmarks. The books and bookmarks will be given to the ARK Crisis Nursery. Social Justice Committee: This month's Social Justice Project is to support the UU United Nations Office's "Every Child is Our Child" program. This program helps children in Eastern Ghana and other African nations. For every $60 we raise one child can attend school for one year. Let's help "educate a child and nourish the future". Visit the website at www.uu-uno.org for more information, or pick up a flyer in the lobby. All contributions are tax-deductible. Thanks in advance for sponsoring this worthwhile program! CAJE update We are anticipating that the next CAJE action will take place on Mon. March 13 – so save that date. The Dental Campaign has continued and we hope to have something positive to announce in January. FIRST FRIDAY DRUMMING CIRCLE

WELCOMING CONGREGATION TASK FORCE By Jack Carden A group of interested members has formed a task force to explore the program and possibility of petitioning the UUA to become officially recognized as a Welcoming Congregation. The task force is composed of Alice Carden, Brian Walker, Chris Norrington, Jack Carden, Mollie Pharo and Tina Grant. As you may already know, the UUA promotes the idea of congregations making concerted efforts to welcome bisexual, gay, lesbian, and/or transgender people and offers the ability for churches to become officially recognized as a Welcoming Congregation after they have completed the 16 action steps recommended by the UUA’s Office of Bisexual, Gay, Lesbian, and Transgender Concerns. The task force intends to begin a series of activities designed to orient and educate the congregation with regard to this program. Over a period of about six months, the task force hopes to sponsor workshops, film viewing sessions, small group discussions and other activities that we think will be fun and informative, helping the congregation become more comfortable discussing the topic. Then after about six months, the task force will assess its progress and determine whether the congregation is ready to petition the UUA to become officially recognized. The UUA requires an official congregational vote on this matter before any petition is delivered. If you have suggestions or concerns, please contact one of the members of the task force and let him or her hear you. We have pledged to listen faithfully and bring to our own meetings all comments, and suggestions and criticism about the program and how we at the UU Church of Evansville might approach the matter. While we suspect that an informed congregation will be in favor of supporting this program, we are certain that our congregation is open-minded enough to learn more about this topic. Watch the newsletter or listen in church for announcements about upcoming activities. As President James Madison once said, "Knowledge will forever govern ignorance: And a people who mean to be their own governors, must arm themselves with the power which knowledge gives." ON A LIGHTER NOTE:
A
Woman went to the Post Office to buy stamps for her Christmas cards. "What
Denomination" asked the clerk? "Oh, good heavens! Have we come to this?"
said the woman. "Well give me 50 Baptist and 50 Catholic ones."
Fair Exchange coffee and chocolate bar order forms are available in the foyer or contact Chris Norrington at cnorrington@hotmail.com. Please place your order by the 25th of each month. Wanted: Lorraine and Richard are in need of a PET CARRIER for their second cat. If you have one to spare, or to sell, please call. You might also send an e-mail to dreamconsult@insightbb.com. Thank you. Thank You Shannon and Amy! Thank-you Shannon Marcotte and Amy Windle for being such wonderful childcare workers in the nursery this past fall. If you haven't stopped by to meet them and say thank you, there's still time––they'll be back in the winter and the spring. They have, however, headed back to their native Texas for the holidays, so...we're looking for some childcare volunteers for January first. If you can help on January 1, let me know. Thanks!
