BOARD OF DIRECTOR’S MEETING

UUCE Board of Director's meets the first Wednesday of the month at 6:00 PM.

POTLUCK

Our next potluck will be on November 25, 2007.  Come join your fellow UU’s for good food and good conversation!

FROM YOUR BOARD PRESIDENT…

As I write these words, there are many exciting things happening in our church.  Our Interim Minister Search Committee is talking to a very interesting candidate.  Our Settled Minister Search Committee is almost ready to open our Congregational Record to ministers looking for their next opportunity.  Our Worship Committee is meeting to prepare engaging and powerful Sunday services.  The Transition Team, Caring Committee, Religious Education Committee and teachers, House & Grounds Committee, and others are meeting and working to make this the great church community it is.

Our newly formed Membership Committee has taken its first tentative steps to help visitors and new members “connect” to this wonderful church and liberating denomination we call Unitarian Universalism.  Our newly formed Stewardship Committee is defining how they can best serve the congregation by putting year-round stewardship processes in place.

Making all this happen takes lots of fantastic, caring, generous, and motivated people… people like you!  Without you, there would be no shinning light of liberal religion in our area.  As your Board President, I see first hand all the energy and passion that goes on behind the scenes, and I feel tremendously grateful to be part of this community.

In the very near future (perhaps even before this issue of The Compass comes out), you will receive a letter telling you about an exciting and generous offer being made by one our members to help us land a Settled Minister.  The individual making the offer deserves a hearty thank you, of course, but I also think this is a perfect example of the type of people we get to share time with each week.  And it really is about the people, me, you, “us”, our Unitarian Universalist Church of Evansville with its honorable past… and very bright future.

- Dave Granholm

NEW STEWARDSHIP COMMITTEE

Previously, the Board approved a plan for a full-year Stewardship Committee.  This fall, the seed has been planted and 4 members have come forward to nurture the seed, Chad Tew, Debra Stong, & Bob & Carole Rust.  The committee needs at least two more members, so if you are interested, contact Debra Stong at jsmathews@sbcglobal.net.  This committee will reflect the new approach that issues of money, the care of the church, the spiritual growth of the members, education, & the accomplishment of the Church's mission be seen as an integrated process.  This will become a vital networking tool for within the church as well as a tool for outreach.  We are very excited about the possibilities & believe this will support our church's growth & well-being.  -Debra Stong

FALL FESTIVAL A SUCCESS!

Thanks to everyone who helped make the UU Fall Festival Booth a success!  I appreciated everyone who helped cook chicken, bake cookies, or work at the booth for a few hours.  A special thanks to Mary Helen for all her work behind the scenes.  –Teri Rawlings

 GREETERS NEEDED

As the Greeter Coordinator, I need your help in making sure that there are smiling faces to greet newcomers and good friends alike on Sunday mornings before church.  The goal is to have two greeters for every Sunday.  You don't have to get there super early, just by about 9:40 or so.  For a complete job description and to sign up, see me, Lauren Talley, in church or contact me via phone or email (xgj36@hotmail.com).  Thanks and I look forward to hearing from you

COFFEE

Chocolate will be available for order beginning November 1st.  Place your order for a case of chocolate, cocoa, coffee, and other items.  Contact Chris Norrington at cnorrington@hotmail.com.  Thanks for your continued support of this project that helps the Unitarian Universalist Service Committee.

NATIVE AMERICAN DRUMMING CIRCLE

The Native American Drumming Circle meets the first and third Friday of each month at 7:00 PM at the church.  All are welcome.

SOCIAL JUSTICE

The holidays are just around the corner!  For November, we will be collecting for Heifer International.  This is an organization that supports families around the world by providing animals to help families have a sustainable way of life.  Our goal is $100 to pay for sheep for a family in Guatemala. Please help support this worthwhile organization.  Visit their website at www.heifer.org.  For December, we will again be supporting the AIDS Holiday project.  Look for the holiday tree in the foyer that will help provide gifts for a needy family that is affected by AIDS.

PSG MEETINGS

We are a pagan study group that is currently working on meditation, energy work, magic, and ethics, as well as learning about a host of other pagan practices and topics. You do not have to be pagan to attend these meetings. We hold group celebrations for the fire festivals and public celebrations for the solstices and equinoxes.  Contact us (Megan Tuley and Lauren Talley) at evansvillepsg@hotmail.com (Lauren) if you have any questions (see calendar for dates and times).

CROP WALK

The 2007 annual CROP Walk will be held on Saturday, November 3. This is an interfaith event, a 4-6 mile walk to raise money for world hunger relief. We need some folks there to represent UUCE. Registration begins at 9:15 AM and the walk begins at 10 AM at the Tri-State Food Bank in Evansville. If you’re interested in walking or in sponsoring a walker, please see or call David Fentress.

SAD NEWS

We have received news of the death of Ruth Knapp (widow of the Rev. Calvin Knapp) in a very tragic automobile accident in June in Arizona. Ruth had been living in Nashville, TN.

One of her daughters, Jane Knapp-Walling, sent a letter to the UUA and to Glen Snowden sharing news of the accident:  “It is with great sorrow I inform you that Ruth died in an Accidental Death on June 8, 2007.  Several members of the family were traveling together toward the Grand Canyon.   Near the east gate entrance a semi-truck hit our van. Mother was killed. I was driving and lost my left leg.  One brother had a serious concussion, his wife a broken leg and her mother major lacerations. My niece of 20 something escaped major injury and began organizing assistance before the helicopter rescue arrived.”   The members of the family who were injured are all recovering.  Jane herself reports that: “I am recuperating at home from a Below the Knee Amputation.   I am completing Physical Therapy and Physicians Assistance at Vanderbilt University Medical Center.   I ought to have my first temporary prosthetic leg in two weeks.    I have taken off from teaching until Thanksgiving to adjust to a different life style, to take care of myself, and to attend to mother’s simple estate.”   Jane’s contact information is:  Jane Knapp Walling, 3847 Cross Creek Road, Nashville, TN   37215     janewallingis@comcast.net

Our caring and healing thoughts are with the Knapp family as they move through this challenging and difficult time.
