Sermon Schedule: Minister: Consulting Interim Minister Myron Andes’ regular office hours are Tuesday and Wednesday from 1:30-4:30. If you cannot reach him in the office please leave a message at 474-1704 and he will return your phone call in a timely manner.
Thoughts in the Interim Whew! That was fast! It was less than two months ago when I first received an email from Ben Sizemore, then a call from Lincoln Christensen, about serving as Interim Minister in the Unitarian Universalist Church of Evansville. Indiana. A very long way from where I was in the San Francisco Bay area. I confess, I had to dig out my map. But a few weeks later here I am and very happily so. I want to thank you for the warm welcome. I’m finding this to be a friendly city and the congregation to be terrific. What a bunch of warm hearted, committed, intelligent, articulate, energetic folks! I am so looking forward to working with you in this interim period. I’m here to be your “minister-in-the-meanwhile,” to help the church remember its past, realize its identity, develop new leadership, increase connection to the larger UU movement, and to find, prepare for and welcome your next settled minister. In addition I’ve been asked to help the congregation learn to provide an even warmer welcome to new members and friends, enhance its religious education program for children and be a voice for liberal religion in the greater community. With that agenda, I think we’d all better roll up our sleeves and get to work! Actually, I find much of this work already well in motion, and folks ready and willing to carry it along. And that is a truly wonderful thing. I am eager to connect with each of you individually, and each committee or group. That’s one of the joys of a smaller congregation; the minister can actually do that! Please call or e-mail me to set up a time for a chat or a meeting. If you wonder whether I really want to take time to talk with you…the answer is yes. I would love for you to stop by my office at church. It’s probably best to call first to set an appointment. My regular office hours will be Tuesday and Wednesday from 1:30 to 4:30. I am available for meetings and individual conversations by appointment Saturday through Wednesday. Thursday is my study and writing day. Friday is my day off. This year of transition can’t be anything other than exciting. I look forward to talking and working with you!
Myron Andes Sunday Services
October 1-Days of Awe The Jewish High Holy Days are the ten days between Rosh Hoshanah (this year September 23) and Yom Kippur (this year October 2.) It is a time to reflect on the past and rewrite the course of the future, to forgive and to seek forgiveness. We will try to learn from this ancient tradition and share in a litany of reflection, forgiveness and commitment to the future.
October 8- Transitions: On Interim-ness This church is in a time of profound transition. With the change in professional ministry that is underway it is a time of many new possibilities and a time to identify the core of who we are as a church. And, of course, each of us is at such a point of possibility and change every day. Our Consulting Interim Minister and Board President will share some thoughts on transition.
October 15- Wisdom in the Dessert At the end of a meal came a bit of wisdom. After that came the real lesson in living. Myron will share a true story of Buddhist wisdom, endings and beginnings.
October 22- Bioethics Our guest speaker will be Margaret Au. She has a Master of Science degree in Bioethics from the University of Pennsylvania and is studying for a Master of Science degree in Genetic Counseling. She will share some thoughts from the field of Bioethics about end-of-life decisions and the human desire to extend our choices beyond our lives: Autonomy After Death.
October 29- Day of the Dead It is a Latin American tradition at this time of the year to honor loved ones who have died and celebrate the ongoing presence of ancestors in life. We will build an altar together with photographs and mementos of loved ones who have passed from this life. Please bring photos, keepsakes and other meaningful symbols for this service of remembrance and celebration. FROM THE SEARCH COMMITTEE The search committee met for the first time August 28th and has met weekly since. The search committee retreat was September 8th and 9th. The committee members are Ann Hanat, Isabel Lavins, Ed Howard, Marv Albin, and Brenda Kreiger. Ann has been elected the chair, Brenda the secretary, and Isabel the negotiating team representative. We plan to continue to meet weekly as there is lots of work to be done. We will do our best to keep the congregation informed of our progress. Please look for a poster that will soon be in the church lobby to help keep everyone informed of all we have accomplished and all that we still need to do. We had a congregational meeting on September 20th to help us gather information from everyone on what is wanted in the new minister. Please take the time to complete a survey that we prepared to help us with this. The deadline to turn in the survey is October 6th. You can mail the surveys back, bring them to church, or take them to the fall festival booth. We are eager to know what everyone is looking for with our next minister! ANNOUNCEMENTS Fall Festival Fall Festival is here! Take a look at your schedule and sign up for an extra shift at the booth. UUCE needs everyone’s help to make our Fall Festival fund raiser a huge success!! DISCUSSION GROUP The UUCE discussion group meets at 9:00 a.m. on the first and third Sundays each month. Questions, contact Tina Grant at tinagrant@sigecom.net. THANK YOU Earlier this month we had a major downpour, and we ended up with 12 inches of water in our garage and downstairs, which ruined quite a lot of furniture, belongings, and personal items. I e-mailed Eric and told him that I had good news and bad news - the good news was that when I died, he wouldn't have so much stuff to sort through... I sent out an urgent plea for help, and was totally overwhelmed by the response. Different people came to help over a period of several days, but Sunday afternoon was the most amazing - trash was bagged and hauled to the curb, tree limbs were cut and removed, the garage was emptied and bleached and re-stocked, the water-logged heavy furniture was lugged up the stairs, etc., etc. - a major overhaul in just three hours time! We send our heartfelt and eternal thanks to Tina Grant, Nancy Higgs, Jean Pharo, Janet Lindholm, Ann Hanat, Mark Rigney, Dale Mosberger, Suzan Ozel, InSuk, David, Dana, and Jay Granholm, Marie-Paule Marty, Shannon Siekman, and Karen Kaminsky for all of your hard work. Thanks also to John Schaefer who stopped by later in the day, when we were sitting outside in shock and in tears after everyone had left, who entertained and distracted us for an hour. We also would like to thank all of you who were unable to help that weekend but called and sent e-mails with words of support and concern. Also thanks to our minister Myron for your "house call" and compassionate words. We never would have made it through this ordeal without all of the help we received from our congregation. Jan Steinmark and Susan Thomas
