September 2006
Sermon Schedule: From The President: The UUCE Board of Directors is pleased to announce that Myron Andes has accepted our position as Consulting Interim Minister this coming year. He will begin his service in early September thru end of August 2007. Myron comes to us after completing Interim Minister Training this summer, doing internship at UU San Mateo, CA, completing coursework at Starr King UU Seminary, and serving the UU San Mateo church as summer RE Program Director. His sense of humor, pleasant demeanor, and sincere interest in being the best minister he can be makes me very happy he chose to come here. The UUCE Board of Directors has asked Myron to focus on developing a religious education program, leading inspiration and spiritual Sunday services, and maintaining our liberal religious UU presence in the Evansville community. Marti Warner will head a small group of members to assist Myron in settling into Evansville. Congratulations to
all.... RELIGIOUS EDUCATION AT UUCE The board of Directors believes that RE is an important product for us to offer the congregation. Therefore RE will be stressed this year. Please take a moment to read the following article and decide how you can help RE. RE News The new year of Religious Education classes for our children and teens will begin soon. The overall focus for RE this year is World Religions. The first regular RE classes will be September 10th. There will be an RE open house at Chalice House after the service that Sunday. All are welcome to see the classrooms, meet teachers, look over curriculum, and fill out registration forms. What’s currently lined up: 1) Mollie Pharo will be the director of Religious Education for the 2006-2007 year. 2) After having taken last year off, Kristi and Bryan Walker will again be our high school youth group leaders. 3) Nancy Higgs will be teaching the junior high RE class again this year 4) Jan Steinmark will provide another year of social justice projects, plus assistants to help the children work on those projects, the first Sunday of each month. These projects will be done in the board Room at the church building, not at Chalice House. 5) There will be a Social Justice project on Sunday, September 3rd, and regular RE classes and RE registration and open house will be Sunday, September 10th. 6) Several people have volunteered to be substitute teachers or assistants in RE classes, or to be involved in teaching RE for short-term curriculum “chunks.” 7) We have trained leaders and several young men the right age for the OWL (Our Whole Lives) sexuality curriculum. We have hopes of finding enough other students grades 7-9 to be able to offer it this year. The last time we offered the junior high OWL curriculum was in 2000-2001. What’s needed: 1) Ideas and people to help. Currently, we do not have anyone to be the main teachers in either the class for 4yr-olds through 1st graders or the 2nd grader-4th grader class. We can make it work without those positions filled, but it does help the kids to have a familiar face each week. If anyone is willing to volunteer for one of those positions, please let me know. Also, if you are willing to teach or assist in either of those classes on either an occasional basis (knowing ahead of time when that will be) or to provide activities and an age-appropriate lesson on a particular world religion, please call or email Mollie Pharo (molliep@evpl.org). Thanks FROM THE BOARD The UUCE Board of Directors has established a policy of background checks for anyone regularly involved with children's activities for the church. Lincoln Christensen, President, will be gathering the forms necessary for the background checks and circulating them to the UUCE Board of Directors, RE Teachers and assistants, and any other person associated with the care of our children. It is very important to complete the permission form and return it for fast processing. Our safety policies require two adults present whenever children are gathered in the church's supervision. The UUCE Board of Directors is committed to this measure and will serve on a minute's notice any person requesting their help being the second adult present. Merely advise a board member or the president of your need. This policy is of most importance for everyone's safety. We will monitor this closely. ANNOUNCEMENTS Fall Festival Calling all chicken cookers… the time has come to put on your chefs hats and help cook chicken for the fall festival. Watch for sign- up sheets to be passed around during the next few Sundays. Or call Teri Rawlings and let her know when you can help! NEW TO UU?
THANK YOU TINA The board wants to thank Tina Sizemore for the efforts she made last year to keep the RE program alive and well. Thank you, Tina. THE HUNGER SITE I'm wondering if all our UU friends know about the Hunger Site. Their site is linked to several others (Animal Rescue/Literacy/Breast Cancer/ Environment...) and within about 30 seconds you can click on each site and do a number of good deeds every day - they give mammograms, food for animals, buy rainforest etc. Each of the sites has a daily reminder function so people can pick their favorite to start with. You do NOT get any junk email from them! Please support their free, worthy causes. http://www.thehungersite.com/tpc/ERH_081506_THS BEATRIX POTTER PROGRAM Beatrix Potter (1866-1943) is the English Universalist who brought us Peter Rabbit. Growing up in a wealthy British family, where she learned from a governess rather than going to school, Beatrix spent a lot of time by herself. So she learned to find friends in nature, paying close attention to the plants and animals around her. Betsy Bray, expert on all things Beatrix Potter and by association Peter Rabbit, will present a slide show program at Central Library on Thursday September 21 at 7:00 PM on the author, the author's home, Hilltop Farm and her many famous books for children. Bray spends part of her summers volunteering at Hilltop farm in England's beautiful Lake District. The event is free. For further information, please call 428-8241.
